What Datum checks

Before you send a crew, you should know the business on the other end is real and whether others have had trouble getting paid by it. Datum looks up the company behind the name and pulls the public records that answer those questions.

Business registration
Whether the company is registered and active in its state, and who is listed behind it.
Civil court cases
Lawsuits filed by or against the business in county court.
Mechanic's liens
Liens filed by contractors and suppliers who say they weren't paid for work on the client's projects.
UCC filings
Uniform Commercial Code notices showing which lenders hold a claim on the business's equipment or other assets.

Public business records only. Datum does not use consumer credit reports.

Who it's for

Small commercial contractors who do the work before they get paid: HVAC, plumbing, and electrical shops, construction subcontractors, and other trade businesses.

When a client doesn't pay, a small shop carries the cost of the labor and materials already in the job. Datum is built to help you see that risk before you take the work, not after.

How it works

  1. Enter the client's name

Type the business name you were given and the state it operates in.

  2. Datum finds the right company

Business names are messy, with trade names, abbreviations, and look-alikes. Datum matches the name you have to the correct registered business.

  3. Datum pulls the records

Registration status, court cases, liens, and UCC filings tied to that business.

  4. You get a plain-English summary

What was found, what wasn't, and what deserves a closer look before you commit.

Datum is in development.

We're building it now and shaping it around how contractors actually check out new clients. If you run a trade or construction business, we'd like to hear from you, whether you want early access or just want to tell us how you vet clients today.
